Sermon 11 Nov 2018
Phil 2:1-11
Christ’s example of humility helps us navigate a struggle well
Phil 2:1-5 A ‘struggle’ produces relational pressure
Paul’s appeal to this church in the midst of their struggle is to
- Verse 2: Be like minded, love, be one in spirit
- Verse 3: Consider others to be significant
- Verse 4: Look to the interest of others
- Verse 5: Have the same mindset as Christ in your relationships.
Paul has been through his fair share of struggles and he knows that trials can push people apart.
- Acts 15:39
Pressure finds relational weakness and it pushes people apart.
- To be humble in the midst of this, helps people stay together.
Phil 2: 6-8 An illustration of Humility
Jesus made himself nothing and took on the nature of a servant.
- He didn’t have to, he chose to.
- He lived his life looking after the interests of other people.
Jesus didn’t demand what was right, what was fair, what he was deserved.
- Rather He willingly gave up his life to save others.
Phil 2: 9-11 Attitude determines altitude.
There is a reward for humility.
- Ps 147:6
- James 4:10
- Proverbs 29:23
- 1 Pet 5:5
If you look after what goes into a struggle, God will look after the outcome of a struggle.
